William E. Awtrey, Jr., 93, passed away peacefully at home on November 20, 2013.
Born in West Columbia on June 23, 1920, son of William E. Awtrey of West Columbia and Elvira Harmon Awtrey of Lexington.
Bill graduated from Clemson University in 1941 as a 1st Lieutenant. Joining the Army Corps, he went to pilot training and entered WWII as a B-38 pilot. Bill served in the Air Force for 22 years earning the rank of Lt. Col. After retirement, he joined Boy Scouts of America as an Executive and later became a teacher for 7th and 8th grade. He was also a Mason.
Bill is survived by his wife of 11 years, Theresa R. Awtrey. From a previous marriage they have 5 children, Sandra A. Johannsen of NC, Stephen Awtrey of MA, Helane A. Beachler of OR, Camille Vaiden and Murray Hudson both of West Columbia. The family also includes 9 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Mt. Tabor Lutheran Church of West Columbia, Friday, December 6, 2013 at 11:00 AM. Refreshments will be served by the Ladies Aide to the family. Family requests instead of flowers, a donation be made to American Cancer Society. Burial will take place at a later date.
