From 1832 to 1840 he was a merchant tailor in Hartford. In 1841 and 1842, kept the Exchange Hotel in Hartford, and afterwards engaged in the insurance business. In 1849 moved to Pittsburgh, Penn. He obtained a charter for the Pittsburgh Life Insurance Co., and in 1854 secured a charter for the Dollar Savings Bank of Pittsburgh, of which he was the Cashier and Treasurer from its start to the time of his death, 12 Feb., 1881. Besides these institutions he was connected with others, both financial and benevolent, among these he was the Vice-President of the Union Insurance Co., President of the Duquesne Ineline Plane Co., and had been President of the Humane Society for two years. He was a member of the Vestry of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, was active in temperance organizations and a Mason of high standing, belonging to Tancred Commandery, Zerubabel Chapter, and Mt Moriah Council.
