Crushed By Coal Truck Wednesday, Ord Man Is Dead
Condition Thought Not Bad at First, Took Turn for the Worse, Died That Eve

Bert Hurlbert passed away in the night Wednesday night following an accident Wednesday morning in which he was crushed between the Methodist parsonage and a loaded coal truck, which was being backed into position to unload coal by George Hubbard. Hubbard thought that Mr. Hurlbert was watching to see that the truck was backed up in the right place, and did not know he was behind the truck until he was caught.
It was at first thought that he was not very seriously injured, but in the afternoon he took a turn for the worse, and it was soon evident that he was dying. He was known to be slightly hard of hearing, and it is probably something attracted his attention and he did not realize the truck was coming until it was too late.
Bert Albert Hurlbert was born in Bliddon [sic], Carrol county, Ia., on June 12, 1883, and died in the Ord hospital Wednesday night, January 19, 1938 at the age of 54 years, 7 months and 7 days. When he was but nine months of age the family moved to Custer county, Nebraska where he grew up and received his schooling.
He was married to Ida Dawe of Burwell, July 5, 1920, the marriage taking place in Ord. Most of their married life has been spent in Ord and vicinity. Nine children were born to them, seven of whom survive. Two children, Della Rose and Dean Wayne, died in early childhood.
The children who survive are: Ray, 16, a student in the Ord high school; Dudley 14, and Evelyn 13, students in the junior high school; Loyal, 11, and Dolores, 9, grade school pupils; Leonard, 3, and Larry, 9 months of age.
Besides his wife and children Mr. Hurlbert is survived by his mother, Mrs. Nightengale, and stepfather, George Nightengale; one brother, Ed Hurlbert of Ord; and one half brother, Roy Nightengale of Burwell.
There are also a large number of more distant relatives and friends. Funeral services were held from the Pearson and Anderson chapel Friday afternoon at 2:30 with Rev. Mearl O. Smith of the Ord Methodist church in charge and burial was made in the Ord cemetery.
