Daniel, the son of Dorine Barco, dear stepson of Oliver D. Barco and dear brother of Geneva Riddick of Chesapeake Virginia, and the son of James Sutton, enlisted in the US Marine Corps on October 30, 1967 in Richmond VA. He arrived in Vietnam on March 13, 1968 where he was assigned for duty and served with Company H, BLT (Battalion Landing Team) 2/26, 9th MAB, FMFPac.

During the beginning of November the BLT participated in several search and clear operations southeast of Da Nang. On November 17 Company F and H were transported 3 kilometers southeast by helicopter to the village of Tan An bordering the South China Sea and began to search the area. During a break, PFC Riddick was swimming in the sea and was pulled under by a strong undertow causing his death by drowning.
