Carlos Antonio de Jesús Carrillo y Lugo was born at Mission San Gabriel shortly before his family returned to Santa Bárbara, where he was baptized at the Santa Bárbara Presidio Chapel February 17, 1784 (BP Baptism 00019). Carlos enlisted as a soldado de cuera at the Presidio of Santa Bárbara and was posted to the Presidio of Monterey where he married María Josefa Castro y Romero (SC Baptism 01784) in the Monterey Presidio Chapel May 26, 1808 (SC Marriage 00744). Carlos retired from the army as a sergeant. He served as governor of Mexican Alta California 1837-1838. Carlos died at Santa Bárbara and was buried in the mission cemetery February 26, 1852.
