WILSON, Wyo.
Mark C. Ames
Outdoorsman was committed to education

WILSON, Wyo. Longtime valley resident Mark Carpenter Ames died on Dec. 24, 2011, at the age of 53. Mark had battled cancer courageously for five years, and was in Boston, Mass. receiving treatment at the time of his death.

Mark was born Feb. 25, 1958 in Natick, Mass. He attended Natick public schools and the University of Vermont, and earned a degree in outdoor education from the University of Oregon. In his mid twenties he came to Jackson where he devoted himself to the healing and support of troubled teen boys.

Mark felt all boys deserved a climate of encouragement, respect and support. He was a strong believer in the therapeutic benefits of the wilderness experience. He founded and directed the wilderness program at Redtop Meadows Residential Treatment Center. Mark became active in the Association of Experiential Education, and was able to translate his work at Redtop into a model for wilderness treatment nationally.

Mark needed to be connected to the outdoors, and was even known to go AWOL from treatment in Boston to go hiking.

He was a great wit, whose words would inspire and move his colleagues, his students and his friends with their humor or their pathos. He loved to mentor newcomers to the field, and was expert at building rapport, and finding a way to connect to others.

He skied, hiked, rode his bicycle, played hockey, or backpacked at every opportunity. He danced with joy, created fire ceremonies, juggled and followed the Bruins.

He loved to cook and was as at ease cooking for one as he was for one hundred. He was completely unique, and a constant source of enjoyment and stimulating conversation for those around him. He was friends to hundreds, and brother, uncle and mentor to many more.

Mark is preceded in death by his father, George, and his nephew, Adam. He is survived by his beloved mother, Mary Ellen Crawford Ames; brothers Larry and his wife, Jay, and Robert and his wife, Pam; and nephews, Jesse Nation-Ames, of Missoula, Minn., Ellery Ames, of Boulder, Colo. and Mason Ames, of New York, N.Y., and his dog Slim.

A memorial gathering was held in Francestown on Jan. 1. A celebration of Mark's life will be held in Jackson Hole at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Mark's memory may be made to the Redtop Meadows Residential Treatment Center, P.O. Box 290, Wilson, Wyo. 83014. Donations in memory and honor of Mark will be earmarked for the wilderness program.

Jellison Funeral Home in Peterborough is assisting the family with the arrangements.
