Dennis, the son of Eva F. Rodriguez of Chicago, and Angel E. Rodriguez also of Chicago Illinois enlisted in the US Marine Corps on November 6, 1968 in Chicago. He arrived in Vietnam on May 7, 1969 where he was assigned for duty and served with Company A, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

At the beginning of the month the Battalion began a security operation for the rice harvest in the Chau Phong village area east of the An Hoa Combat Base and continued with daily patrols in Quang Nam Province.

On October 4 while setting up an Out Post outside the An Hoa Combat Base a box mine was tripped wounding two Marines. One of the casualties was PFC Rodriguez who was evacuated to the US Naval NSA Station Hospital in Da Nang where he died the next day from the wounds he had sustained.

The parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe of South Chicago suffered more war dead during the Vietnam War than any other Catholic parish in the U.S. This monument, erected in 1970 stands in memory of the sacrifice of twelve parishioners. It is located across the street from the church at 91st Street and Brandon in South Chicago.
