Son of Denning Duer and Caroline King. Married Ellen Travers May 24, 1877 in NYC.

William graduated Columbia University 1869 and law school in 1871. He practiced law from that time until his death.
He was admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of the United States in 1881. Aside from his professional activities, he gave much of his time and means to Philanthropic work. President of the Lying-in-Hospital, a Governor of the New York Hospital, a member of the Board of Managers of the house of Refuge and of the New York Institution for the Blind. He was also a Trustee of the Union Trust Company.

His daughter, Katherine married Clarence H. Mackay. William died at Harbor Hill, the home of his son-in-law.
