Joseph Paul Haggerty was born in New Orleans on June 16, 1889. His parents were John Jerome Haggerty (1862-1937) and Delia Conroy (1863-1938). He was one of nine brothers and sisters. Instead of working in the cotton trade, like his father, Joseph went to acting school to perform in theatres. He married Isabel Lewis in New Orleans in 1907 at age 17 (although they both claimed to be 21). They journeyed together on road shows and on stages across the U.S. They had three children while travelling: Joseph (1909-2000); Donald (1912-2002), and Kathleen (1916-1988).
There is one story that Joseph worked with Boris Karloff on some stock shows before Karloff became famous.
In 1920, Joseph moved the family to Los Angeles to try his luck in the movie industry. Although he didn’t appear successful, the family stayed. Around the late 1920s, Joseph divorced Isabel and married Mildred S. Brewer. Later he stopped acting and worked in advertising and sales. By 1946, Joseph and Mildred founded a spiritual unity church in North Hollywood, which still exists to this day. He retired as pastor in 1968. Joseph died in a Burbank hospital on May 2, 1973 and was buried at the cemetery in North Hollywood.
