Dr. Stephen Michael Adams Sr., 52, passed away Friday, Aug. 11, 2006, at Sentara Obici Hospital Suffolk, Virginia. He was born Aug. 31, 1953, in Norton, Va., and was preceded in death by his parents, Carl Estel and Joanna Swindell Adams. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 24 years, Bonnie Drewery Adams, and three children, Joanna Lee Adams, Abigail Amanda Adams and Stephen Michael Adams Jr.; his stepmother, Louise Wax Adams of Norton. Mike is also survived by his father-in-law, A. Frank Drewery of Windsor; sister-in-law and husband, Gail and John Massey Brock of Surry; brother-in-law, Artie Drewery; a niece, nephews, cousins, and an aunt, Shirley Swindell Hubbard, of Norton. Dr. Adams graduated from John I. Burton High School, attended Clinch Valley College and received his degree in medical technology and specialty in blood banking from the Medical College of Virginia. He then received his Ph.D. in Pathology/Immunohematology from the Medical College of VA at Virginia Commonwealth University. He taught in medical technology programs at J. Sargent Reynolds Community College in Richmond, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, Clark County Community College-Las Vegas, and King Abdul Aziz University Hospital in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. On returning to the United States and Windsor in 1996, Dr. Adams chose a career change to financial planning. He trained as a financial advisor with American Express Financial Advisors, now know as Ameriprise. Mike was very active with Colonial Virginia Council of Boy Scouts of America. He served as scoutmaster for Pack 41 Cub Scouts, committee member with Troop 41 Boy Scouts, and the sponsor representative with Venture Crew 41, all of Windsor. He served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Geneive Shelter. He was a member of the Isle of Wight Ruritan Club, serving in many capacities from president to committee member. He was a member of the South of the James Business Network. Mike was a member of Woodland United Methodist Church and served on various committees and as Sunday school superintendent. A celebration of life service will be conducted 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 14, in Woodland United Methodist Church with the Rev. Michael Harrington officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 13, in Colonial Funeral Home. The family suggests memorial contributions to one of the organizations in which Mike was so involved. Arrangements are in the care of Colonial Funeral Home, Smithfield.
