Joseph James Haggerty was born on July 12, 1868 in New Orleans to Dennis Haggerty (1824-1890) and Mary Barry Haggerty,(1834-1902), both parents were Irish immigrants. He was one of 10 siblings. Joseph was postmaster of the Carrollton neighborhood of New Orleans. In summer 1898 he embarked on the French steamship SS La Bourgogne to travel to Ireland to see his parents' relatives.
Disaster struck on July 4, 1898 when La Bourgogne collided with the British sailing ship Cromartyshire and sunk within minutes off the coast of Nova Scotia. 549 passengers were lost including Joseph. No other information about a memorial service for Joseph was found. His name was written on his father's gravestone at St. Patrick's Cemetery in New Orleans.
