José María Osuña y Alvarado was born at the Presidio of Loreto, Baja California, New Spain. He was the son of soldado Juan María Ismerio Osuña y [?] and María Ignacia Alvarado y [?]. He relocated to Alta California as a very young boy, probably before 1783. His father participated in the Portolá Expedition of 1769 and while at San Diego was stricken with fever. We know this because his name appears in a letter dated October 10, 1770, written by sargento José Francisco Ortega y Guerra He married María Antonia Marta Cota y Lugo at Mission San Buenaventura on November 8, 1807, officiated by Fr. José Señán (SBV Marriage 00536). José Maria's sudden death in mid-March 1813 left his 20-year-old widow with four very young children. José María was buried in the Mission San Buenaventura cemetery on March 17, 1813, with Fr. Marcos Antonio Vitoria officiating (SBV Death 01694 ECPP).
