Medical Educator Son of Pioneers

Death came Saturday to Dr. William Sargent Ladd, 62, last surviving child of William Mead Ladd, one of the early builders of Portland. Dr. Ladd died of a heart attack at the Presbyterian hospital in New York City.

His sudden death ended a career that extended into the fields of medicine, teaching, writing, flying, mountain climbing and hunting.

Dr. Ladd was born in Portland August 16, 1887, and retained interests here all his life. He was graduated from Amherst college in 1910, then earned his M. D. degree at Columbia university in 1915. In 1913 he married Mary Richardson Babbott, who survives him. Their children included Frances Wood Ladd; William Sargent Ladd Jr.; Anthony Thornton Ladd and John Ladd, all of whom survive.

College Posts Filled

Dr. Ladd worked and taught at Johns Hopkins university and hospital before becoming associate dean of the medical college at Cornell, later becoming a professor, the positon he held at his death.

He was director of Seaboard Surety company and also owned the Sunset Ridge housing development in Portland. He was a trustee of the American university of Beirut, Syria. In the first world war he served as a lieutenant in the medical reserve corps. Before the second world war he had become a pilot at a time when flying was still in its infancy. He was also an ardent mountain climber, hunter and general outdoorsman. He was a frequent and learned contributor of articles to both medical and mountaineering magazines, according to Who’s Who in America.
