A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-four in Harrisburg September 6, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 7 as a private with Co. A, 210th Pennsylvania Infantry, promoted to corporal, date as yet unknown, and honorably discharged with his company May 30, 1865.
He married Sarah Jane Bowman and fathered Lydia Ann (b. 02/21/68 - married Charles Keen Swain, Jacob I. A. Mertz, and a Shirk) and William Madison (b. 07/09/71). Sarah died in 1875, and he married Leah H. Romberger, although they apparently had no children.
Given the stated age at enlistment, his birth year may have actually been 1839 since a recruit of Sheesley's age had no reason to understate it at his enlistment.
