Born Dec 7, 1917, he was the son of the late John A. and Emily Landrum Creech, Sr. John was a native of Harlan Co. and spent most of his childhood in Danville where he graduated from high school. He received a degree in mining engineering from the University of Kentucky in 1940 where there is an honorary scholarship in his name. While at UK he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. Following graduation, he operated coal mines in eastern Kentucky. During World War II he moved to California and was employed by Lockheed Martin Aircraft and served in the United States Coast Guard. Following the war he returned to mining work in Kentucky. During the 1960s he ran several retail coal yards in Lexington, and in the 1970s entered into commercial real estate development, as well as a variety of other investments. He was a faithful member and supporter of Central Christian Church, was an avid golfer and long time member of The Lexington Country Club, a member of the Lexington Club and a former member of the Lexington Rotary Club. Following his retirement, John wintered in Naples, FL. John supported many charitable organizations including Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital, the Lexington Theological Seminary and Central Christian Church. His primary focus was Central Kentucky Riding for Hope, a therapeutic riding program for the disabled, where he was the lead donor for their new John A. Creech Facility at the Kentucky Horse Park.
