While doing genealogical research I learned that my grandfather was one of nine children born to Jose Lopez and Celsa Gonzalez Quintana. So logically I questioned why the surnames was wrong. I learned that being country folk they delayed registering the births of the children. It was typical. When it was finally done my g-grandfather Jose had passed away and the registrar recorded both my grandfather and one of his siblings Jorgina with only the maternal surname. Years later my father having learned this decided it wasn't worth the effort to correct the records and we have been Gonzalez ever since.
I recently found the birth certificate for my grandfather. It shows his father as desconocido. So we will never know the true story.
