SSG Ulysses Alford, Vietnam Veteran, resident of Asheville, North Carolina.

Staff Sergeant Ulysses Alford was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Army, SSG Alford served our country until July 9th, 1966 in Thua Thien, South Vietnam. He was 27 years old and was married. It was reported that Ulysses died from small arms fire. His body was recovered. Ulysses was born on June 25th, 1939 in Elizabethtown, North Carolina. SSG Alford is on panel 09E, line 008 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for 8 years.

Ulysses Alford, Sr. was born June 25, 1939 in Elizabethtown, North Carolina to Josephine E. Alford. In 1948 he moved to Asheville, North Carolina where he attended St. Anthony's Catholic School and Stephen Lee High School. He also attended Boggs Academy Boarding School in Keysville, Georgia where he met his wife, Yvonne L. Lanier.Ulysses earned his GED in the United States Army after altering his birth certificate in order to enlist at the age of 16. He and Yvonne were married on December 16, 1959. To this union were born five children, Ulycia Yvette, Ulysses, Jr., Urban Lorenzo, Unee' Shevell and Uvanney Joppa. Currently, Ulysses Alford, Sr. is survived by his mother Josephine E. Holloway, widow, Yvonne L. Alford, and children, Ulycia A. Frazier, Urban L.Alford (Erika), Unee' A. Abrams (Curtis) all of Augusta, GA and Uvanney J. Alford (Alethea) of Gainesville, VA. His eldest son, Ulysses, Jr. passed away in August 1990. He is also survived by six grandchildren, SFC Michael L. Frazier of Fort Gordon, GA., Se`Verine J. Alford and Avery J. Alford of Gainesville, VA, Noah A. Abrams, Urban D. Alford and Kathryn Y. Alford all of Augusta, GA.

He served as a Staff Sergeant with Charlie Troop, 1st Squadron, 4th Cavalry, 1st Infantry Division, USARV.

He was awarded The Combat Infantryman's Badge(CIB), The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal and The Good Conduct Medal.
