Thrown from his horse while returning from Colonel Francis Locke's funeral near Salisbury.
His death notice reads as follows:
In Rowan County, on the 1st instant, Gen. Jesse A Pearson. He had recently received a fall from his horse, which produced such serious injuries to occasion his death.

He was a brave soldier and honest statesman,a kind husband,devoted friend,and a humane master. This humble monument is erected to his memory by his friend and kinsman,John Foard,July 1859.
