Former Merchant Here Dies
Burt F. Caldwell, 78, former Battle Creek merchant and an early day employe of the pioneer Malta Vita Food Co., died Wednesday at his home in Albion where he had lived since 1921.
Mr. Caldwell came to Battle Creek in 1893. His father Samuel F. Caldwell, operated a grocery store on E. Michigan avenue. Burt Caldwell was graduated at the Argubright Business College and after his early association with Malta Vita was employed by the Central National Bank, the Sherman Mfg. Co. and other local firms. His last business here was a grocery in N.E. Capital avenue near the old Piper's Pond.
He was born in Marcellus Aug. 18, 1881, a son of Samuel F. and Hannah (Boyce) Caldwell. On June 15, 1904 he was married to Blanche Louise Markham of Battle Creek who died in 1948.
After going to Albion in 1921, Mr. Caldwell joined the Calvin F. Tucker Department Store and later was employed by the Union Steel Products Co., Consumers Power Co., Albion College, the Albion city schools and by Fred A. Avery.
Since retiring Mr. Caldwell had been active in Murat Lodge, No. 14, F&AM in Albion. He still held membership in the First Methodist Church of Battle Creek.
He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Stuart (Geraldine) Hill of Albion; a sister, Mrs. Beulah Benton of 852 N.E. Capital ave.; a brother, Orle Caldwell of 27 Maple Grove ave., and a grandson.
The body is at the Marsh Funeral Home in Albion.

ALBION, July 17--Burt F. Caldwell, 78, of Albion, died Wednesday at the home after a long illness. He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Stuart D. Hill of Albion. The body is at the Marsh funeral home, Albion. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
