Benton Opal Beatrice McDonald, 90, of Benton died at 6:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, 2007, at her daughter's home. Mrs. McDonald was born Dec. 24, 1916, in Freeman Spur, the daughter of Ocie Abbott and Lillie (Parr) Abbott. She married Randall McDonald on Nov. 5, 1934, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 14, 2000. She retired as a ward clerk at the St. Mary's Hospital in Kankakee and had also worked as a presser at the Joan Claire Dress Factory in Benton. She was a member of the Gospel Assembly Church and enjoyed gardening, crocheting and quilting. Surviving relatives include one son, Max Edward McDonald and wife, Karla, of Christopher; a daughter, Jeanette McKemie of Benton; three grandchildren, Stephanie Allen and husband, Jerry, of Peoria, and Amanda Roecker and husband, Phillip, of Morton, Creg McDonald and wife, Elizabeth, Champaign; five great-grandchildren, Mia and Kelley McDonald, Jacob Roecker, Sean and Brent Koors, three brothers, Lloyd Abbott of Du Quoin, Eugene Abbott of Du Quoin and Henry Abbott of Carbondale; two sisters, Vera Fleming of Du Quoin and Bette Garrett of Decatur, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. McDonald was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a son, Charles Warren McDonald; two sisters, Nadine Jones and Imogene Cook; and two brothers, Harold Abbott and James Abbott. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 25, at the Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home in Benton. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with Pastor Dennis Fitzsimmons officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic and Odd Fellows Cemetery in Benton. Memorial contributions may be made to the TIP Hospice and will be accepted at the funeral home.
