Drowned with his mother Elma and sister Mable. Some records show them at Mountain View Cemetery.

A fearless mother tried to cross the swollen Sullivan Creek in a spring buggy being pulled by one horse during moving to another residence. Otto and his mother were found together wedged in debris in the creek, but the body of Mabel Florence Bennett, age 11 years, was never found. Both were buried in a "handsome casket" in the Sonora City Cemetery per the story in the local newspaper.

The 1900 census lists the following people:
John M Bennett born 1863 in Michigan, single head of household
Otto Henry Bennett, son, born Mar 1898 in CA, aged 2
Elma F Palmer born Jan 1868 kansas, divorced boarder
Mabel F Bullock born Jul 1890 Kansas, boarder aged 9, mother born in Kansas.
