THE PARIS NEWS, 22 Aug 1956

Mrs. J.W. Crook, 2010 Lamar Ave., died Wednesday, at 6:20 a.m. at St. Joseph's Hospital, where she had been taken after suffering a stroke early Monday.

Wife of Lamar County's veteran county surveyor, Mrs. Crook, the former Miss May Neathery, and her husband were both members of early day families settling Lamar County.

Funeral services, Thursday at 4 p.m. will be conducted at Fry and Gibbs chapel by the Rev. John Shuler of First Methodist Church of which Mrs. Crook was a member. Interment will be made in Evergreen Cemetery.

Surviving besides her husband are a son, Olin L. Crook, Austin, and Mrs. Bedford T. Geron, Dallas; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren; two nieces and a nephew.

Born 19 Sep 1872, six miles southeast of Paris, Mrs. Crook was a daughter of Sam Houston Neathery and the former Miss Zurilda Ball.

She attended Paris Female College before her marriage to Mr. Crook, 23 Dec 1896, in the church in Marvin community. The Crooks were one of three couples married the same day in that vicinity by the same Methodist pastor, the Rev. R.S. Gorsline, all three living to celebrate their golden wedding anniversaries. The other couples were W.M. Haley and Miss Mattie Thomas, afterward of Paris and Wichita Falls, and J.M. Holt and Miss Etta Salter of Pattonville.

Mrs. Crook, an invalid nearly 12 years due to a heart ailment, had nevertheless continued many of her activities. She had been a member of women's organizations in First Methodist Church, and held the longest membership in the American Literature Club.
