Mrs. John E. Howard.
Mrs. John E. Howard, for over fifty years a well known and respected resident of this village, died at her home on South Main street, Monday afternoon, at 2:30, aged eighty-three years. Death was a result of a stroke of apoplexy , which occurred last Friday. Mrs. Howard suffered an attack of apoplexy about two years ago, which had impaired her health, but her condition was not considered critical until she suffered a second shock, May 4th. From this time till her death, she had been confined to her bed and no hopes had been entertained of her recovery.
Mary Louise Howard was born in Massachusetts, June 19, 1825, and in 1845, married Horatio Edson in Fall River, Mass. A few years after the death of Mr. Edson, she was again married on September 5, 1857, her second husband being John E. Howard of Fall River. Following their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. Howard removed to Fairport, where Mr. Howard, in partnership with his brother, Lorenzo T. Howard, established a carriage factory and blacksmithing business which grew to very large proportions and in which he was actively engaged for many years until his retirement a number of years before his death.
Mrs. Howard had resided in her late home for over forty years and had been connected with the Congregational church of this village, for forty five years having been president of the Missionary society for twenty-five years.
She was a lady of retiring disposition and much refinement. One whose sweet face and kindly manner had made her innumerable friends. She was a devout Christian and an earnest worker for the good of all. Her acts of kindness and charity are many, and a large circle of loving friends and acquaintances will mourn her loss.
She is survived by two nieces, Mrs. Alice Hall of Smithport, Pa; Mrs. R. A. Fairfield of Saco, Maine, and a nephew, Charles S. Patten of Boston. Two half-sisters, Mrs. Anna Merkie of Rochester, and Mrs. Rebecca Stacey of Easton, Pa., and one step-son, W. W. Howard of San Jacinto, Cal.
The funeral will be held at the chapel of the Congregational church, this afternoon, at 2:30, Rev. D. J. Torrens officiating. The interment will be at Greenvale cemetery.
