The New North-west, Deer Lodge, MT, 6 Jan 1882
Death--In Carroll county, Ohio, December 17, 1881, of paralysis, Jane, relict of James Potts, age 71 years. Deceased was the mother of Governor B.F. Potts of Montana
The Ohio Patriot says: "Her maiden name was Maple, and she was born on the old Maple farm, near Carrollton, in 1810. She was married to James Potts, who died two years ago, about 1830, and to that marriage nine children were born, seven of whom are living, two dead. In that early part of Carroll county was as nature left it, so the deceased was truly a pioneer of that part of the country. After marriage she moved with her husband to a farm one mile west of Wattsville, where they lived for nearly thirty-five years, and where they raised their family. The deceased was a mother in a true sense. Not a child she ever raised can help dropping a silent tear in memory of that fond mother. Her greatest delight during a long and useful life was to work for the comfort and happiness of her children. The fond, motherly care she uniformly showed toward her children when small is remembered by each one, and her memory is cherished as a priceless jewel. There were no professions, but the true Christian graces were found in her character, and the true instincts of a mother were strongly developed. She did not talk of goodness, she was goodness."
