Loyd, Charlie M, loving father & grandfather, passed away, Monday, August 14, 2006. He was born July 2, 1914 on his family's dairy farm near Valley Center. He attended Sedgwick High School and graduated in 1932. Charlie Loyd was a man of conviction & deep spirituality. He was a graduate of Kansas State University and obtained a graduate degree from the University of Maryland. Following a short career in dairy management in the Washington D.C. area, he was inducted into United States Army where he initially served in the medical service corps, among other things, training veterinarians in meat & food inspection for the fighting men. He met his future wife Janice Hoffman Loyd, who was working as an Army nurse at Camp Davis, N.C. They were married in the spring of 1942. Captain Loyd remained in the army for some time following the war, supervising the reconstruction of the South German ceramic industry. Completing his military career, he worked to popularize the "Eskimo Pie." His final career made him known to dairymen throughout much of the Kansas and neighboring states as a representative of the Dodson Silo Company. He was a regular & popular fixture at their state fair booth long after he retired. Throughout all this, he remained a farmer and cattleman at heart, continuing to manage the "home place" which had been homesteaded by his great grandfather in the late 1860's. Charlie was a member of the Masonic Lodge, American Legion, Plymouth Congregational Church, and the KSU Foundation's President's Club. Charlie passed on his love for KSU sports to his family. He will always be remembered by his family & friends as a wonderful & captivating story-teller. Charlie is survived by his children: Marilyn & Wayne Mason, Wichita; Jim & Terrie Loyd, Sedgwick; Linda & Steven Joseph, Council Grove, KS; grandchildren: Chris, Kristen; Jennifer, Stephanie, & Jonathon (JB); 3 great-grandchildren. He is preceded by his wife, Janice Hoffman Loyd, parents, Charlie & Lorraine Loyd; & a brother, Paul Loyd. Visitation 6-8pm, Thurs, Aug 17, Baker Funeral Home Chapel, 100 S. Cedar, Valley Center.
