Allen Faces Preliminary Trial Friday: Nickerson Slayer Plans Plea of Self Defense, Is Held Without Bail (Negro Press Bureau)

Joe Allen, 27, who shot and killed William Earl Nickerson, 25 and wounded Melvin Griffin, 24, Monday April 12 near the corner of 28th street and Central avenue, will begin his preliminary trial tomorrow (Friday) at 10 a.m. in division 4 of the Municipal court before Judge Clement D. Nye. He is represented by Attorney Lloyd C. Griffith. The slaying was the result of an argument over a debt the slain youth was endeavoring to collect from Allen his erstwhile friend. Griffin accompanied Nickerson on his ill fated quest.

Shortly after the deed, Allen surrendered to Newton division police. Det. Lieuts Joseph Clark and Enman McGruder of the Newton police have submitted all their evidence to the district attorney's office. Allen was arraigned Wednesday, April 14 and ordered held for trial without bail.

Last rites were held last Friday afternoon from the Connor-Johnson funeral chapel. Reverends Clayton Russell, pastor of the Independent church of Christ and Samuel M. Beane of Hamilton M.E. church conducted the joint rites in the chapel and at the cemetery. The chapel was packed to more than capacity by friends of the dead youth and family. Interment was at Evergreen Cemetery. The deceased was the son of William Nickerson Jr., president of the Golden State Insurance company. He leaves a wife, Mrs. Bebe Michel Nickerson and a 2 year old son to mourn his passing.
