Born at home in McMinnville, Tennessee, on August 18, 1912, he attended schools in McMinnville, Alexandria, and Lebanon, Tennessee, and graduated from the Castle Heights Military Academy in 1930 where he lettered in football as a 130 pound blocking back. He graduated from Cumberland University in 1934 with a degree in Chemical Engineering and then attended graduate school at Renssaleer Polytechnical Institute (RPI) in Troy, NY.
He worked as a chemical engineer, in the lumber industry, and as a building contractor until he joined the Navy in 1943. Assigned to a Navy Construction Battalion, he served in the South Pacific during World War II, attaining the rank of Lt. Cdr. After the war he owned a residential and commercial construction business in Sumter, SC and also in St. Petersburg, Florida after moving there in 1960. In 1972 he moved to Bradenton, Florida to become a real estate appraiser. He earned the professional appraisal designations of SRPA and MAI and was the founding President of the Florida Gulf Coast Chapter #212 of the Society of Real Estate Appraisers.
Upon retirement he became an avid, inquisitive, and imaginative artist and horticulturalist. He loved golf, participating regularly in the Wednesday Dogfight (golfers over 80) at the Bradenton Country Club. He shot his age every year beginning at age sixty-nine.
He grew up in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church and was an active church member throughout his life. As a member of the Westminster Presbytery he helped establish many churches along Florida's southwest coast. He most recently attended Palma Sola Presbyterian Church.
Predeceased by his parents, and wife of 68 years, Judith, at the time of his death he was survived by three sons and their wives, one brother, one brother-in-law, five grandchildren and their spouses, and seven great-grandchildren.
