She graduated from Newport News High School in the class of 1932. In 1936 she graduated from the Fredericksburg State Teachers College, which later became Mary Washington College. Ethel participated in many activities at the college, among them being president of the College Girls Bible Class, secretary of the Student Government for two years, and a member of Alpha Sigma Phi, honorary scholastic fraternity. She served as the 1936 M.W.C. Class Agent for more than 50 years and was a member of the Peninsula M.W.C. Alumni Association. After college she taught at Lincoln High School in Northern Virginia and also was employed as a senior stenographer for the U.S. Navy Department in Newport News. Ethel and her husband, who was a leading research scientist at NACA/NASA, were active members of Second Presbyterian Church. She wrote the church's 50th Anniversary history in 1949. She was historian for the Women of the Church, Presbytery of Norfolk. She received an Honorary Life Membership and pin in 1974, having joined the Second Presbyterian Church in 1925. She was a member of the Ladies Bible Class and the 'Prime Timers,' a senior citizens group. Ethel was a volunteer with the Cub Scouts, the March of Dimes, American Cancer Society and served as a Heart Fund Captain.

Ethel was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her brothers, Col. Carl B. Nelson, George F. Nelson and Ralph W. Nelson, and her sisters-in-law, Emily Wiley Nelson, Betsy Bailey Nelson and Dorothea Wetmore Goldthwaite.

The funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday July 11, at the Second Presbyterian Church following the graveside service at 10 a.m. Monday in Parklawn Memorial Park, Hampton.
