Thomas was living in Tippah Co. Mississippi by 1858 where he married Nancy Ann Roberts, step-daughter to Major Hampton Montgomery. Thomas and Nancy had one child Sarah "Sallie" Duncan who was born before Thomas went off to war.
The Civil War would change everything for the young family.

Thomas enlisted April 30, 1861 ,Ripley, Tippah, Miss., in the 2nd Reg't, Confederate, Mississippi Infantry, Company B. with Capt. Buchanan.
In September through October 31,1862 he appears on the muster roll of Our House Hospital as Ward Master,he was present at all times.
In November 1862 he was reported absent enlisted men accounted for, sick in hospital.

February 23, 1863 he was admitted to Camp Winder General Hospital in Richmond Virginia with Rheumatism and returned to duty February 24, 1863.

He was captured by the enemy at Gettysburg on July 1, 1863, it's reported that General Schenck had Thomas sent to Fort Delaware that month.

October 30, 1863 Thomas was in U.S.A. Smallpox Hospital in Point Lookout, Maryland. It's reported he escaped December 8, 1863.
He appears on the muster rolls and as being paid and present April through August 1864.

Thomas appears on quarterly return of deceased soldiers of Battle Unit Name: 2nd Regiment, Mississippi Infantry, Confederacy,Company: B.
For the quarter ending September 30, 1864.
He died from wounds at the battle of Petersburg, Virginia

It seems he was never given a headstone if even buried properly.
