John was a son of Reuben Crandell (Crandall) and Rachel Nowlin, his father has a memorial with photo of his father and a photo of grave marker, cemetery is named Nowlin Cemetery and so most likely his mother is buried there too, needs research to know for sure. John married sometime between the 1870 and 1880 census, he appears in the 1880 census married to a Ella A. Learned Crandell, they have two children, Learned W, age 1 and George, age 5m.
