John Rowe was born in the village of Sandy Bay (now Rockport) in Massachusetts. At the age of eighteen he served as a Sergeant against the French at Crown Point. During the American Revolution, he joined the militia, was given a commision to Captain, and fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill. He later fought in the Battle of Bennington Vermont, and stopped the British forces from re-enforcing New York. Captured and placed on the prison ship "Old Jersey" in New York Harbor, he was one of the few to escape, he stole a small row boat and rowed his way to the New Jersey coast where he met up with the Continental Army, and later made his way home.

He had seven children when he died at the age of Sixty Three in Ballston Spa New York, and was laid to rest in Briggs Cemetery. Although it has been rumored he was reburied in Massachusetts in secret, there is no evidence to support this claim. Through the many years he has not been forgotten, and we all admire his sacrifices and dedication to the cause of freedom and the American Nation we all live in today. Rest in Gods grace grandfather, as we fondly recall your name.
