Services for Ralph I Smith, 73, of 3121 State, professor emeritus at Montana Tech, will be Friday at 10 in St. John Episcopal Church, with the Rev.M. Stanley Compton Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery in Dillon.

Professor Smith died Tuesday evening in the Butte hospital. He was born in Dillon Oct. 10, 1908, to Pearl and Nora Smith. He attended schools in Dillon and received a bachelor's degree in Chemical engineering from the University of Kansas in 1932. He earned a master's in metallurgical engineering from Montana Tech in 1933 and also did post-graduate work at Pennsylvania State College.

He joined the staff at Tech in 1946 after several years of milling and assay work and four years in the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II.
His work and publications on Montana clays and their potential use in ceramic products provide the only inventory for this state resource.

Professor Smith was active in Glee Club, International Club and various faculty committees, was secretary-treasurer of the Tech alumni Association and treasurer of the Butt Gem and Mineral Club. He also belonged to Floral Park Community Club.
He and Alexandria Blain married in Helena in 1942. She died in 1977.
Surviving are sons and daughters-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Smith of Kalispell and Mr. and Mrs. James Smith of Spokane; son-in-law and daughters, Capt. and Mrs. Paul (Celinda) Hicks of Fort Benning, Ga., and Sister Mary Lex Smith, S.C.L. of Lenexa, Kansas; sister Rachel Smith of Butte; and five grandchildren.
