Nellie L "Nell" (Harris) Moffitt was born on November 14, 1918 in Elkton, Kentucky, the daughter of Creed Franklin Harris (1877-1960) and Susie Ella (Williams) Harris (1881-1932).

She grew up in a large, loving, musical family and attended elementary and high school in Guthrie, Kentucky. she was a graduate of Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee, and also of George Peabody College in Nashville where she received her Bachelor of Science degree with a major in elementary music, and she did graduate studies at Peabody College, University of Chattanooga and Belmont College.

Nell was married in 1941 to Orvil Lee Moffitt (1919-2003) of Clarksville, Tennessee, the son of Venus Clyde Moffitt (1883-1971) and Arvilla (Pomeroy) Moffitt (1892-1970).

She began her teaching career as music supervisor for the Montgomery County Schools in Clarksville. Then for many years she taught elementary music in the Dalton Public Schools in Dalton, Georgia. While in Dalton, she also directed children and junior choirs and music for Children's Sunday School Department at Dalton First Methodist Church. She was a bible leader for Dalton Methodist Episcopal Church women's circles and received lifetime membership in Women's Society of Christian Service.

Nell taught at Nashville Brockmead Elementary, a model school sponsored by the federal government. She was also the chairman of the committee for the selection of music textbooks for the State of Tennessee.

She and Orvil moved to Tullahoma in 1969 when Motlow College began, where Orvil started the music department and was chairman of the Humanities Division. Nell taught elementary school music in the Tullahoma City Schools until retirement in 1984 and was a member of Coffee County Retired Teachers Association.

The couple joined the First Presbyterian Church in Tullahoma in 1971, and they lived on Tims Ford Lake in Estill Springs, where they enjoyed not only their boys, their families and grandchildren, but lots of swimming, boating, fishing and traveling. Nell's hobbies included music, gardening, flower arranging, swimming, boating, fishing and calligraphy.

A resident of Estill Springs, Franklin Couny, Tennessee, Nell was 96 years old when she passed away on October 24, 2015 at Life Care Center of Tullahoma, which is located in neighboring Coffee County.

Preceded in death by her husband, her parents and brothers and sisters, she was survived by three married sons; seven grandsons; many great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services were held at First Presbyterian Church in Tullahoma, and burial was in Glenwood Cemetery in Elkton, Kentucky.
