According to his obituary in the Janesville Gazette, Edwin Carpenter, a respected lawyer in Janesville, died as the result of a stroke of paralysis. He was born in Vermont, the only surviving son of Ira and Rhoda Spofford Carpenter. He came to this area and attended Beloit Academy, and then Beloit College. Upon graduation he studied law, opening first an independent office, then associating in practice with J.B. Cassoday. Over the years he Mr. Carpenter's next association was with S.J. Todd, under the name of Todd and Carpenter. Eventually he practice law with his son, under the name Carpenter and Carpenter.

He was married to Miss Emma Lappin, and to this marriage two children were born - Edwin and Henry F.
