Marcus Thomas Cameron MacLean Remembered
April 1, 1929-October 14, 2015

Marcus Thomas Cameron MacLean was born in Liverpool, England, on April 1, 1929.
His father owned the family funeral home and wedding carriage company, in Liverpool. This was the family business which was passed down through the generations.
Marcus attended the Liverpool Institute for boys, and his sister, Lilie, attended the sister school across the street for girls.
As a young boy, Marcus was a chorister in the Liverpool Cathedral which was also located across the street from his school.
The institute is now owned by Paul McCartney and is named the "International School of Arts". Both Paul and George of the Beatles attended the Institute as boys.
In 2011, Marcus and Joyce, while visiting England, were able to visit both the school and the cathedral. They also enjoyed attending the Military Tatoo at Edinburgh Castle, in Scotland, which Marcus had always wished to attend.
Marcus often spoke of growing up in England during WWII. He felt that it robbed children, at that time, of their childhood.
During the constant bombing in England, children were sent to Wales and Canada. Many shipped to Canada never saw their parents again. Some ships never even made it to Canada. Luckily, Marcus and his sister, Lilie, were both sent to Wales and lived with the Smiths, family friends, who lived on a small farm. Marcus and Lilie's father had a bomb shelter built at their family home so that the two children could return.
Marcus often shared stories of his beloved dog, Tony, who was known to go to the kitchen window when he heard the German planes approaching. This signaled the family that it was time to head to the air raid shelter. Marcus and Lilie spent many nights doing their homework down in the shelter and waking the next morning to go to school.
Marcus completed two years of pre-med in preparation for Veterinary school, in hopes of fulfilling his lifelong dream to become a Veterinarian. He also enrolled in the R.O.T.C. Airforce as he, by King's rule, had to report to military training and service the day before his 18th birthday. Marcus served 3 years in the Royal Air Force.
His sister, Lilie, completed her military service by working as a secretary for the U.S. Army Veterinary Corp in Liverpool. (The Veterinary Corps' main function was food inspection as well as ordering from the U.S. for troops and animals based in Europe.)
Lilie later met Erle Stanley Gardner, writer of Perry Mason novels, and moved to Temecula, California to work for him as one of his five personal secretaries. Uncle Erle, as he wanted Marcus to call him, was instrumental in bringing Marcus to the U.S. He told him that the United States was “the land of opportunity”. England was still recovering from war.
At that time, to come into the U.S., the screening was strict. Marcus passed the requirements with flying colors, and on December 8th, 1956, Marcus stepped onto American soil, now to be his new home joining his sister and her new husband, Uncle Erle's friend and family physician.
Marcus began employment with Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in 1957, where he met his future bride, Joyce Ann Vance. On December 30th, 1961, Marcus and Joyce were married in Lake Elsinore, California.
Marcus and Joyce were married in December, as Marcus was going to be transferred to Las Vegas, in management, to help open the state of Nevada for MetLife. They moved to Nevada in March of 1962.
In December 1965, their daughter, Melinda was born; and in July of 1968, their son, Derek was born.
In May of 1972, Marcus became a Citizen of the United States.
Marcus retired after 37 years of service with MetLife. He always believed in ethics and helping others, as he always said that he had to look at himself in the mirror every morning.
Marcus believed in having pride in oneself, their heritage, and in all that they do. He felt that there are certain character traits that one should live by and possess. He shared and taught his children and grandchildren the importance of these character traits through example. Such traits that come to mind are… pride, compassion, perseverance, empathy, laughter, and love. He believed in showing love, compassion, and empathy to all of God’s creatures both great and small. Neighbors were always bringing sick and injured animals to his door for “Dr. Doolittle MacLean” to save…and he loved being able to help.
Marcus was a family man. To him, family and friends were dear…a gift…a treasure. He would say, “Family takes care of each other”, and he felt that way about his friends as well. He was always there for those he loved. He expressed his love through both acts of kindness as well as by telling them…”I love you”.
Marcus was a people person and had a way of making those around him feel comfortable. He had a quick wit and sense of humor. He had a way of making those around him laugh and smile, even in bad times. Marcus always had a joke or a funny comeback that just livened up the room. This ability stayed with him right up to his last days here on earth.
Marcus had a strong faith in the Lord and His teachings. He was not afraid of leaving this earth. He spoke of Heaven with excitement…. as if he was looking forward to the adventure…. and wondering who would be waiting for him on the other side. He made sure to always remind those that he would be there looking out for them and waiting for them when the Lord called them home.
Marcus and Joyce have been happily married nearly 54 years. They have been blessed with two kind, caring children as well as four dear grandchildren, Jimmy, Caitlin, Cameron, and Vance, all of whom they are proud of and love dearly.
On October 14th, 2015, Marcus Thomas Cameron MacLean was called Home. His adventure with the Lord, and loved ones who passed before him, has just begun. God Bless until we are together again.
