Robert Semple was born at sea in 1733 when his parents John and unknown Semple immigrated from Scotland to Pennsylvania. These Presbyterian Scots settled on the then Western frontier in Carlisle, PA. In 1763 Robert married Lydia Steel, daughter of the "Fighting Parson of Carlisle" The Rev. Capt. John Steel. In 1774 Robert was the Sheriff of Cumberland County, appointed by Gov. John Penn. He owned a tavern in Carlisle, very close to his father-in-law's church. Robert and Lydia had five children before she passed away in March 1775. Robert married Elizabeth Young the following year. He served in the militia during the Revolutionary War. In 1794 he owned a tavern in West Pennsborough turnpike. He is buried in Allegheny Cemetery in Pittsburgh with his second wife Elizabeth and his daughter Elizabeth.

Their names are on the base of the monument for Henry Hays and his wives, including Elizabeth Baily Hart Hays who is probably a granddaughter.

I believe this is in section 2, the Hays plot.
