Ernest Tyra Bynum, 93, died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 1996, in San Diego, CA., where he and his wife had only recently taken up residence in a nursing home to be nearer to their children. A native of Blount County and long-time resident of Oneonta, Mr. Bynum was a son of the late Realy and Emma Dailey Bynum and husband of Wilma Murphree Bynum. Mr. Bynum held a degree from the University of Alabama and had taught in a number of schools including Oneonta Grammar School. He was for years a Sinclair oil distributor and also served for a time as administrator of Blount Memorial Hospital. He was a member of Lester Memorial United Methodist church, where he had served in many capacities over the years, and of Oneonta Civitan club, at whose meetings he used to play the piano. Noted for the reams of poetry he could quote without faltering, he was a familiar figure about town, nattily dressed and driving a vintage 1950s Lincoln. Surviving besides his wife are daughter and son-in-law Carol and Nick Frost, San Diego; son and Daughter-in-law Dr. Max and Nina Bynum, Groveland, California; grandchildren Lauren Bynum, Matthew Bynum, and Michelle Bynum; and sister Ruby Box, Cleveland. Rev. Bert Goodwin and Rev. Gary Formby officiated a memorial service Feb. 11 at Mr. Bynum’s church. Afterwards, the family greeted relatives and friends in the church fellowship hall. Only the immediate family was present the preceding day for burial of remains at Antioch Methodist Cemetery on Straight Mountain.
