Walter S. Downs, 87, U.S. Army veteran and resident of Alexandria, died on October 26, 2015.

Mr. Downs was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Elizabeth, and his brothers, Daniel and Harold. He is survived by his daughter, Debbie, nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Visitation is Sunday, November 1 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. with a Masonic service at 5 p.m. at Everly Wheatly Funeral Home, 1500 W. Braddock Rd., Alexandria.

A celebration of life service will be held at First Baptist Church of Alexandria, 2932 King St. on Monday, November 2 at noon followed by interment at Mt. Comfort Cemetery.

De was raised a Master Mason in Henry Knox Field Lodge No. 349 and was an Honorary Member of Manasseh Lodge No. 182 and of Olive Branch Lodge #114. He was very active in Masonry throughout the Northern Virginia Masonry. Adept at Masonic ritual he often served as lecturer at degree conferrals and Installing Officer for the Installation of Officers in many lodges in the region. After many years as Secretary of the Scottish Rite bodies of the Valley of Alexandria of the Orient of Virginia he was recipient of the highest honor the Scottish Rite confers, the 33° Inspector General Honorary and the Grand Cross of the Court of Honor (GCCH).
