Herbert O. Birkness was married to Lucille McIlveen Birkness and had three children: Denise, Daryl and Brian.
Raised in the Bawlf district of Alberta, Herb was a grain buyer with Federal Grain Company from 1928 to 1932 when he joined the Alberta Wheat Pool Company. The family moved in 1949 from Rimbey to Cayley following Herb's appointment as Wheat Pool Agent.
Herb was a member of the IOOF and Treasurer of the Cayley Credit Union for several years.
His wife Lucille passed away November 7, 1962. Herb married Ruth Couey in 1964.
