Tomorrow afternoon, from the family residence on west Fourth street, will occur the obsequies over the remains of Mrs. Sophia Langwerth, wife of Henry Langwerth who figures as a witness in the Behrens case.
The deceased was sixty years of age and a native of Germany. Her death was the result of an illness of some duration. She is survived by her husband and three children.
(Quad-City Times - August 7, 1917)
Mrs. Sophia Langwerth, age 60 years, wife of Henry Langwerth of Davenport, one of the witnesses in the celebrated Behrens murder case, died at her home in Davenport Sunday evening. Mr. Langwerth, who testified in regard to the paris green features of the case, was arrested later on the charge of perjuring himself in testifying that he had never served a term in the Sing Sing (N. Y.) penitentiary and that he had screened his past from his family.
Mrs. Langwerth, who was ill at the time, was so shocked by the ruthless tearing aside of the veil of ignorance, by the revelation of her husband's duplicity and by the subsequent indictment of her husband by the Scott county grand jury, that she was rendered seriously ill and the final dissolution was hastened.
