"I LOVE YOU MORE"
We lost our beautiful Mother, but she is now resting peacefully in Heaven with Dad. She was born to Harvey Smith and Velma Bratton in Caldwell, Kansas.
At the age of 17, Betty joined the Navy and served in World War II as a Radio Operator stationed in Hawaii. She and Dad married in 1946 in Vancouver, Washington and together raised five children.
They were very involved in the foreign student exchange program. They opened their home to students from Brazil, Chile, Sweden and Japan. This created life-long relationships where they visited in their countries and even had the students children come to the U.S. to attend school.
Betty worked as a waitress at the Quay Restaurant in Vancouver, Washington for 25 years.
After retirement, she and Dad spent 20 winters working as missionaries in Mexico. She cared for the sick children in the camp they resided in and accompanied several to the U.S. for heart surgeries.
Betty had a huge heart and gave so much.
She enjoyed many things: attending orchestra concerts and plays, walks, reading, shopping for clothes, going out to lunch, volunteering, and her little dog, Nikki...these two gave each other so much comfort.
In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde (2014); brother, Hap Smith; and sisters, Emma Lou Aslin, Milly Comstock, Norma Friedland, and Bobbie Evans.
She is survived by her children, Rod (Janet) Barnes, Pam (Larry) Bush, Sheila (Doug) Hayes, Tami Briggs; and Kelli Dubay; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and her brother, Jerry Smith.
Betty was a one-of-a-kind lady and will be greatly missed.
As a memorial for our Mom, please take the time to do something kind for someone...tell them it's from B.J.
Burial was at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon with full military honors on Thursday, November 5, 2015. All were welcome to attend.
