William P. "Bill" Akins died Sunday, March 18, 2007 at the Borgess Medical Center,Kalamazoo. He was born in Battle Creek on July 5, 1929 the son of Francis L. and Pauline E.
(Devereaux) Akins and graduated from Homer High School in 1947. Bill retired from Michigan Carton in 1992 after 45 years of faithful service. He also worked as a bus driver for the Harper Creek School District for many years and for more than 30 years,delivered the Battle Creek Enquirer to commercial accounts. Bill married Betty Lowe in Battle Creek on June 26, 1951; she survives. He is also survived by his sons, Dan Akins and William Akins Jr., both of Battle Creek;a brother, Francis (Wanda)Akins Jr. of Battle Creek and many cousins. Bill was preceded in deatby a brother Theodore Akins. Dedicated to his church and family, Bill was a charter member of the Newtown Church of Christ and a member of Central Christian Church for more than 20 years where he served as a deacon and member of the Church
Board. Known as a "Neighborhood Dad", he enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing,doing yard work, being at church and spending time with his family and friends.At the request of the family,friends may call after 5:00 p.m., today at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home where they will be received 5:00 - 8:00 p.m.Funeral services celebrating Bill's life will be held 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 21, 2007 at the Central Christian Church, 713 Riverside Drive,
Battle Creek, with Pastor Gordon Pippin, Pastor Bob Heine
and Bill's son Dan Akins, officiating. Interment will follow
at Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens. Memorials made to the Central Christian Church would be appreciated. Personal messages for the family may be placed at www.farleyestesdowdlle.com
