He is survived by his wife of 78 years, the former Clara A. Bridgewater ;and his two children, a son, George L Ackerman of Advance Mills and his wife, Sharon, and his daughter, Clara C. Zauner also of Advance Mills. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Dr. Karen C. Ackerman Wyman and her husband, Dr. James, of Gig Harbor, Washington, Jennifer Zauner Fetsko and her husband, John of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Cynthia Zauner Leeds and her husband, Jeff of Atlanta, Georgia, Kenneth Zauner of Advance Mills, Virginia, Pamela Zauner Frazier and her husband, Keith of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Kathleen Ackerman Ricks and her husband, Brad of Midlothian, Virginia; and 14 great grandchildren, Rebecca, James, Cameron and Julia Wyman, Austin and Hunter Fetsko, Daniel, Lauren and John Leeds, Seth, Kyle and Peyton Frazier, and Silas and Caleb Ricks.
Mr. Ackerman graduated from Dickinson High School in Jersey City, New Jersey. After school he started his work at the Manhattan office of the Long Island Lighting Company and during World War II worked as a supervisor for the Federal Division of IT&T in a defense department before moving on to the Prudential Insurance Company in 1951. Upon his retirement from Prudential after 27 years, he and his wife moved from Butler, New Jersey to Advance Mills Virginia where they have lived for the last 32 years.He was active in sports as a young man, a very capable softball player, vacationed with his children and grandchildren, attended UVA football games, enjoyed gardening and loved spending time with his family.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, November 5, 2015, at Hill and Wood Funeral Home, interment will follow at Holly Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 4, 2015, from 6 until 8 p.m. at Hill and Wood Funeral Home.The family would like to thank the staff at The Harbor of Stanardsville, Virginia for their care and support during his stay there.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mr. Ackerman's memory to the Alzheimer's Association at 1160 Pepsi Place suite 306 Charlottesville, VA 22901.Friends may send condolences to his family at www.hillandwood.com
