William Leo Hayden was the son of Charles William Hayden and Sarah Elvira Hayden. He is frequently confused with his first cousin, also named William Leo Hayden, born at the same time and place, and also married to a Catherine, aka "Kate." (His first cousin, William Leo Hayden, was the son of his mother's brother, Benedict Joseph Hayden and Matilda Abell, and his wife was Catherine Blanford)

Employed by the railroad as a "steam locomotive engineer," he was first with L&N RR in Kentucky, and later with Gulf & Ship Island RR in Gulfport, Mississippi. The 1910 US Census shows 12 of the 16 families listed on that page for Corbin, Ky were employed by the railroad. (The Corbin Railroad Museum is scheduled to open in 2016.)

William Leo was married three times and had six children - five by his first wife, Susan Catherine Abell, and a son, William Leo, Jr, by his third wife, Ella Scott Slack. He and his second wife, Mary Elizabeth Rogan, had no issue.

Children:
Prudence Mildred Hayden (1892-1941)
Owen B Hayden (1894-1901)
Marietta Hayden (1896-1969)
Charles Washington Hayden (1898-1968)
Anita C Hayden (1901-1935)
William Leo Hayden Lilley (1923-1975)
