He died from injuries sustained in an automobile accident at St. Mary's Hospital in Tucson, Arizona. His tomb at Calvary Cemetery in Los Angeles briefly became a shrine and a site of pilgrimage after his death, as the faithful gathered in prayer hoping his intercession would lead to a miracle. From his obituary in the Wichita Catholic Advance, March 8, 1930:
"Exiled Mexican Priest Killed By Auto Crash:
Los Angeles, Feb. 28 - Exiled from Mexico during the persecution, and since then one of the refugee priests of the Diocese of Los Angeles and San Diego, the Rev. Luis Amezcua y Orozco, is dead here of injuries received in an automobile accident near Tucson, Ariz. Father Amezcua y Orozco was born in Zamora, Mexico, and belonged to that diocese. At the time of the penal enforcement in Mexico, three years ago, Father Amezcua came to Los Angeles."
