Archie Welton Harrington, age 103, was the eleventh child in a family of twelve children- 6 boys and 6 girls. He attended elementary school in Marietta and graduated from Fairmont High School. His family home is located near Marietta, where Welton lived all of his 103 years. His family farmed, so he became a dedicated farmer himself. When he married Irene in 1937, they began their lives in the Harrington home place and raised their children there.
Farming was Welton’s livelihood, but working in Planter’s Warehouse in Fairmont was his joy. He worked there during tobacco selling time every summer for 50 years. He loved being with the numerous farmers and his co-workers. But most of all, he loved sales day when the warehouse was an explosion of excitement.
Welton loved his church. He has attended Olivet United Methodist Church almost every Sunday of his 103 years and has been Sunday school superintendent since 1965.
Archie Welton Harrington was a distinguished and honorable man who liked everyone he met. He has set a wonderful example for all who knew him.
He has said many times, “The Lord has been good to me, and I give him the credit for my good health and long Life.”
Welton was preceded in death by his loving wife, Irene Johnson Harrington, a very dear son, Abner Harrington, his parents, Abner William and Malinda Rogers Harrington, six sisters, and 5 brothers
He is survived by two daughters; Mary Wilkerson and husband John, Marie Graham and husband Tony, a son Archie Harrington and wife Dare and a devoted daughter-in-law Susan Harrington. He is also survived by six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren who all adored their Papa.
