FLORENCE - Richard (Dick) Gilder, 67, passed away peacefully Tuesday, August 29, 2006 at his home in Florence surrounded by his loving family and friends. Dick was born September 10, 1938 at the old St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula to Margaret and Richard M. Gilder.
When Dick was 8 his mother met an untimely death. During this difficult time for his family, he and his sister, Nancy, lived with their beloved grandparents Henry and Helen Stroh on Lower Miller Creek Road. It was here on the Stroh Farm that the foundation for Dick's character was formed and many wonderful memories where made. Later, Dick moved to Red Lodge where he excelled in athletics and academics, graduating from Red Lodge High School in 1956.
In pursuit of higher education Dick traveled to Pueblo, Colo., where he was awarded a football scholarship at Pueblo Junior College. After receiving his associate's degree he returned to Missoula and spent the summer working at the Bonner mill. In the fall of 1961, Dick accepted a scholarship to play football for the Montana Grizzlies and completed a bachelor's degree in education. Upon graduation Dicks love of coaching was reinforced while working as an assistant coach for the Grizzly freshman team.
In 1964 Dick met, fell in love with and soon married his wife of 42 years, Luanne. Dick accepted his first teaching and coaching assignment in the small town of Leadore, Idaho.
Dick then accepted a teaching and coaching position in Havre. He was involved in coaching wrestling and football with the Havre Blue Ponies and experienced the joys of having a state championship football team. During their five years in Havre they welcomed son's Jeffrey Richard and Tyler Russell.
The family moved to Deer Lodge for a short time before moving to Provo, Utah, where Dick continued his coaching and teaching career for the Orem Tigers. Being the Jack of all trades that he was, Dick built a beautiful new home for his family in the middle of a cherry orchard. It was here in Provo that they welcomed daughter Katie Lyn.
Longing to return to their Montana roots, the family moved to Florence in 1978 where Dick began his 23-year teaching and coaching career at Florence-Carlton High School. Florence proved the perfect place to raise a family and they welcomed their last son Erik Gabriel. The Gilder family loved and embraced the Florence community and made many life long friends. Throughout his years in Florence, Dick was a teacher of history, geography, government and economics and coached track, basketball and football. As a teacher, coach, father, husband and friend, Dick touched many lives in one way or another. His natural leadership and coaching ability allowed him to connect with his students. He always believed sports and extra curricular activities where the second part of a good education and important in developing a well-rounded person.
Richard lived his life with dignity, courage, strength and honor. His quiet and gentle spirit touched many and will be greatly missed by all. He is survived by his loving wife, Luanne; children Jeff (Janice) Gilder, of Corvallis, Tyler Gilder, of Tustin, Calif., Katie Gilder, of Hamilton, and Erik (Elen) Gilder, of Chanhassen, Minn.; sisters Nancy (Rene) Mood, of Schertz, Texas, Mary (Al) Simmons, of La Mesa, N.M., Kathy (Don) Sandine, of Red Lodge, Patty (Ron) Prinkki, of Roberts, Virginia (Henry) Eicholz, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Evelyn (Steve) Heimbicher, of Billings; brothers Robert (Beverly) Gilder, of Red Lodge, Thomas (Michelle) Gilder, of Winnemucca, Nev., and Howard (Jeanette) Gilder, of Columbus, Ohio; grandchildren Kimberly, Aaron, Jayce, Madeline and Elsie and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. WE LOVE YOU DICKIE BOB!
The family wishes to thank Drs. Patrick Beatty and Richard Sellman for their excellent and loving care during Dick's journey through cancer. A special thank you to Donna Hoffman, Judi Maki and the angels known as the Montana Cancer Center Nurses - we appreciate the extra years of life that Dick and his family enjoyed as a direct result of your care. Thank you doesn't express the gratitude we feel towards our wonderful friends John, Vicki and the entire Cornish Clan - we don't know what we would do without you! Thank you to the Florence community for all your years of support!
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 2 at the Florence High School gymnasium, followed with a reception in the old gym. In lieu of flowers the Richard Gilder Memorial Fund has been established at Farmers State Bank, P.O. Box 40 Florence, MT to help defray expenses incurred through Dick's illness.
