Clara Florenza Schubarth was born at 8 Meeting Street in Providence, Rhode Island to Caspar Daniel Levor Schubarth (1829-1908) and Sarah Anna Lincoln (1836-1920) on 18 August 1858.

Her father would move the family to Dover, New Jersey in November 1865, and later to Brooklyn, New York in 1870, when she was just 12.

She would meet and marry John Charlton McCurdy, an entrepreneurial man, 6 years her junior. They would wed at her parents home at 188 Mt. Prospect Street in Newark, on 12 February 1890. The Reverend William Hayes Ward officiated the ceremony.

She had 4 siblings who died before the age of 5. Those children are buried at Swan Point Cemetery in Providence, Rhode Island. She had one surviving brother, Robert Gordon Schubarth (1871-1946). He, along with her parents are buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Hillside, NJ.
