Emma was educated in the county schools of Benton and Tippah Counties and at Blue Mountain College Normal School. She taught school at Hopewell, Mississippi, before her marriage, and at two neighborhood schools, White and Graham. She married Professor Edgar Blizzard of Myrtle, Mississippi, on 5 September, 1912, at the home of her parents, William Beauregard Simmons and Lydia Sanders Simmons, west of Blue Mountain. They met at a teachers' convention. Her husband's death left her with two teenagers and two pre-teens to raise, and a couple of farms to manage from her home in New Albany. She never learned to drive, but managed with fortitude and a sense of serenity that made her loved and cherished by many.
