Gertrude A. Lantz died peacefully in her sleep on March 22, 2012.
She was born in Dushore, Pa., on January 23, 1921, the middle child of Floyd and Agatha Middendorf Hembury. She was predeceased by her parents; her brother, Joseph Hembury of Dushore; and her sisters: Mary McEwen of Williamsport; Agatha Aldridge of Dushore, and Geraldine Krakoski of Wescosville. She was also predeceased by stepsiblings: Jean Smithkors, Cecil Smithkors, Arthur Smithkors, Clair McEwen and Leland McEwen,and by half-sisters: Adelaide Finan and Ethel Fulmer. Gertrude graduated from high school in Dushore, Pa., and as a registered nurse from the Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pa., in 1942. She married the late Donald E. Lantz at St. Basil’s Church on November 21,1942. Donald predeceased her on August 28, 2008 in Venice, Fla., where they had lived for twenty years after spending the first decades of their married life in Sayre, Pa., and summers at Lake Wesauking outside of Wysox, Pa. They had celebrated 65 years of marriage in the year before her husband’s death. Gertrude worked as an obstetrical nurse in New Jersey before her marriage and later in life worked as an industrial nurse at the Ingersoll Rand in Athens, Pa. Gertrude and Donald donated time for many years to Meals on Wheels. Gertrude’s most important role in life was caring for her family. Gertrude had two daughters: Donna L. Conway (Joseph Conway, deceased) of State College, Pa., and Theresa A. Kennedy (Kenneth Packard) of Lynn, Mass. She dearly loved and spent much time with her three grandchildren: Joseph C. Conway III of Axemann, Pa.; Brendan D. Conway (Theresa) of Sanford, N.C.; and Deirdre A. Conway (Andrew Spencer) of La Jolla, Calif. Gertrude had two great-grandsons: Austin and Nicholas of Sanford, N.C. She had the pleasure of having many loving nieces and nephews. Gertrude’s life will be celebrated by a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, July 5, 2012 at 11 a.m. at St. Basil’s Church in Dushore, Pa., where she was christened and married.
